Cornellis de Houtman and his entourage from the Netherlands in 1579 as the first international tourist to land on the island of Bali. He said that the island of Bali was unique. Tourists who came to Bali at that time were so crowded that the Bali Express Ship had to sail 18 times a year.

Besides, Miguel Covarrubias, author of “The Island of Bali,” Mrs. Menc (Ni Ketut Tantri), author of “Revolt In Paradise,” also promoted Bali.

Walter Spies (one of the creators of the Kecak Dance with Rudolf Bonnet, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati), Le Mayeur, and Antonio Blanco, also promoted Bali.

Some of them settled and considered Bali to be their home.

Comedy actor Charlie Chaplin also visited the island of Bali at the invitation of Spies in 1939.

The result of their promotion was that news about the beauty and unique culture of the island of Bali quickly spread by word of mouth in parts of Europe. The name of the island of Bali at that time was known as The Island of Gods.

With the increasing number of international tourist visits to the island of Bali, in 1930 in Denpasar, the first hotel in Bali was built by the Dutch Colonial Government.

During this time the path to enter the island of Bali was not only by sea but also by air with the opening of Tuban Airport in 1935, now its name is Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Tourism activities in Bali were stopped for several years during World War II and the War of Independence until the joining of the island of Bali to the Republic of Indonesia on August 17, 1950. Foreign tourists returned to Bali and began the era of professional tourism management on a massive scale because it was not only tourists from foreign tourists but also from domestic tourists who began to travel in Bali.

In the world, Bali is famous as a tourism destination with a unique variety of arts and culture, especially for Japanese and Australian tourists.

The terrorist attack took place on October 12, 2002, in the form of a Bali Bomb attack in the Kuta Beach tourist area, leaving 202 dead and 209 others injured.

In 2003, around 80% of Bali’s economy depended on the tourism industry.

The Bali Bomb attack also occurred three years later, on October 1, 2005, in Kuta and Jimbaran coast. Bomb victims were 23 people killed and 196 others injured.

These events received wide international coverage because most of the victims were foreign tourists and caused the Bali tourism industry to face severe challenges several years afterward.

Fortunately, Bali managed to keep up its territory as a favorite tourist destination of world tourists.

In 2017, foreign tourists who visited Bali around 4.5 million people.

In the annual index published by MasterCard, 8.26 million foreign tourists visited Bali in 2018. Bali was ranked 19th in the index. In the Asia Pacific, Bali ranks 9th as the most visited destination. While the top positions are occupied by Bangkok, Singapore with 14.7 million visitors, and Kuala Lumpur with 13.8 million visitors.

Based on the report, the number of tourists visiting Bali is slightly above Hong Kong with an estimated 8.23 million international visitors in 2018. The index estimates the average length of tourist visits to Bali around 8.6 days. The average cost spent during their vacation in Bali is around 125 US dollars or 1.7 million rupiahs per day. Based on the latest MasterCard report, the largest origin of international tourists to Bali was China by 22.4 percent, Australia by 19.3 percent, and India by 5.8 percent.
